Urban Data Collective

DEVELOPING INTELLIGENT URBAN ENVIRONMENTS IN THE UK

Client Overview

Urban Data Exchange (UDX) is a UK-based startup committed to developing urban living through the effective utilization of data streams. The company envisions building smart cities by harnessing the power of data to enhance various aspects of urban life, from infrastructure and transportation to public services and sustainability. (road temperature, air quality, parking spots, light controls, etc.)

Challenges

UXD faced a significant challenge related to the management of roles and permissions within its platform. As the volume and diversity of data streams increased, the existing system struggled to provide the necessary granularity in controlling user access and permissions. This complexity hindered the platform's ability to effectively serve the needs of different user groups.

Our Involvement

Our primary goal was to establish a user-friendly and seamless experience that integrates various roles and permissions. To achieve this, we utilized Miro for ideation and brainstorming sessions, while turning to Figma as the primary tool for wireframing, design, and prototyping.

User Research & Personas Development

Brankka team conducted user research to explore the needs, challenges, and expectations of a diverse array of users, through series of interviews. Additionally, we developed user personas, defining their goals and pain points with precision to thoroughly represent distinct user groups, such as city planners, government officials, businesses, and citizens.

Roles & Permissions

Roles and permissions on a web platform refer to the assigned rights and capabilities granted to different user roles within the system. The personas we formulated, representing roles such as the Admin and Organisation Member, have significantly aided us in gaining a deeper understanding and categorisation of user flows.

Navigation and Sitemaps

In order to achieve our goal, we undertook the task of redefining the navigation structure of the platform, in order to provide intuitive access to relevant features tailored to different user personas (e.g. member persona). Additionally, we mapped new user journeys to streamline workflows, enhancing the overall efficiency of the platform.

Wireframing & Prototyping

Brankka team created wireframes and detailed prototypes using Figma, for conducting feasibility checks with developers. This approach also served to effectively communicate user flows to product owners and stakeholders. Moreover, we formulated a strategy for implementing platform changes, particularly in the introduction of new settings for roles and permissions. The strategy aimed to minimize disruption to the learned behavior and mental models of existing users.

Results

Improved User Satisfaction: The new UX design and revamped roles and permissions system improved user satisfaction, reducing frustration and enhancing overall usability.

Efficient Workflows: Users reported more efficient workflows, allowing them to access and analyze data streams with greater ease.

Increased Platform Adoption: Improvements led to increased adoption of the UDX platform by diverse stakeholders, contributing to the realization of smart city initiatives.
